One day, Chicken Little was walking under an oak tree when — bonk! — something fell on her head.

"Oh my goodness!" cried Chicken Little. "The sky is falling! The sky is falling! I must go and tell the king!"

She ran down the road and met Henny Penny.

"Where are you going in such a hurry?" asked Henny Penny.

"The sky is falling! A piece of it fell right on my head! I'm going to tell the king!"

"Goodness!" said Henny Penny. "I'll come with you!"

So Chicken Little and Henny Penny ran down the road together. They met Ducky Lucky.

"Where are you two going?" asked Ducky Lucky.

"The sky is falling!" they cried. "We're going to tell the king!"

"Oh my!" said Ducky Lucky. "I'll come too!"

So Chicken Little and Henny Penny and Ducky Lucky ran down the road together. They met Goosey Loosey.

"Where are you all going?" asked Goosey Loosey.

"The sky is falling! We're going to tell the king!"

"How terrible!" said Goosey Loosey. "I'll come along!"

So Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, and Goosey Loosey ran down the road together. They met Turkey Lurkey.

"Where are you all going in such a fuss?" asked Turkey Lurkey.

"The sky is falling! We're going to tell the king!"

"Mercy me!" said Turkey Lurkey. "I'd better come too!"

Then they met Foxy Loxy.

"My, my," said Foxy Loxy, with a sly smile. "Where are you all going?"

"The sky is falling!" they all cried together. "We're going to tell the king!"

"I know a shortcut to the king's palace," said Foxy Loxy. "Follow me."

But a wise old owl was watching from a branch above.

"Stop!" called the owl. "Chicken Little, what exactly fell on your head?"

"A piece of the sky!" said Chicken Little.

"Look under the oak tree," said the owl.

They all went back and looked. There on the ground was a small brown acorn.

"That," said the owl, "is an acorn. It fell from the tree. The sky is not falling."

Chicken Little turned very red. The others looked at each other and shuffled their feet.

Foxy Loxy slipped away into the bushes, his shortcut forgotten.

And Chicken Little learned that before you spread a story, it's best to check if it's true.
